Feeding your dog food that is nutritionally appropriate is extremely important. A diet that suits your dog well helps them to thrive both healthily and emotionally.

However, as with humans different diets suit each dog differently. Read on to see if your dog has any of the following issues and whether a veterinary-approved diet is necessary for your dog!

1. Your dog is overweight or underweight

Obese or overly skinny dogs can cause health issues to your dog. A dog that is overweight can have an increased risk of heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, arthritis and more.

On the contrary, an underweight dog may spell out an underlying condition such as worms or gastrointestinal issues, to more serious issues like cancer, thyroid disease or diabetes.

Diets that are vet approved are formulated to ensure that your dog gains or loses weight healthily with the correct nutrients they require. For example, an overweight dog may require a diet that is higher in protein, but lower in carbohydrates and fats.

Some vet-approved diets for your fido include Diamond Care Weight Management Dog Food. This dog food is specially formulated to be a complete and balanced grain-free, low fat and high fiber diet to help control weight, while at the same time, contains additional glucosamine and chondroitin for joint support. Hill’s Science Diet Perfect Weight Dog Dry Food is also a good alternative.

2. Your dog has sensitive skin or itchy skin

Many dogs living in Singapore are plagued with food allergies. This means that your dog’s body is unable to accept one or more ingredients in normal diets and may cause excessive itching, skin and ear infections, diarrhoea or even vomiting and weight loss.

Some common food allergens include beef, soy, wheat, corn, or dairy products. Environmental allergies are also relatively common where your dogs may be allergic to dust mite, pollens or even grass!

While there are no reliable tests to determine allergies, these vet recommended diets are usually hypoallergenic and have a limited number of ingredients.

You may also speak to your veterinarian about doing a food elimination trial. Hill’s Science Diet Sensitive Stomach & Skin Dog Dry Food contains only one protein type

3. Your dog has gastrointestinal issues

Some dogs are more prone to vomiting and diarrhoea and may be diagnosed with IBD. If your dog suffers from such issues, he or she will benefit from a diet that is more easily digestible and easy on the stomach.

Vet recommended diets like Diamond Care Sensitive Skin Formula For Adult Dogs Dry Food uses hydrolyzed protein which are effective in managing dogs with IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) or if they are prone to having diarrhoea.

However, it is important to consult your veterinarian to understand if there are any more serious underlying issues.

4. You own a large breed

While every breed has its own traits, a large breed dog requires a special diet to avoid health risks related to their breed!

For example, Golden Retrievers are prone to joint issues – the Royal Canin Golden Retriever Adult Dog Dry Food contains ingredients that help to maintain an ideal weight so as to not put additional pressure on their joints. The kibble shape and size has also been scientifically proven and adapted to suit the shape of the Golden Retriever’s mouth.

ROYAL CANIN® Maxi adult dog food is also filed with EPA and DHA to keep their coat nourished. It is also formulated to support digestibility to help prevent stomach bloat which is relatively common in large breeds. It also contains hydrolysed crustaceans which contains glucosamine that supports large breeds healthy bones and joints.

5. Your dog’s age is 7 years and above

Yes, don’t be surprised, a senior dog starts at the age of 7! As your buddy gets older, their energy level starts decreasing and food with too high calories may cause an increase in their weight and worst case, obesity.

Senior dogs also require a diet that is more easily digestible so that their digestive system does not have to work doubly hard.

These special diet help address these issues. Hill’s Science Diet Mature Adult Senior Vitality Dog Dry Food contains ingredients that are easy to digest, vitamins C and E to support a healthy immune system and Omega 3 and 6 for a shiny and luxurious coat!
