The Best Food for Your Puppy

There are many factors to consider when choosing the right dog food for your puppy. Puppies need twice as much as adults need. Puppy dog food must support the development of muscles, teeth, organs, healthy skin, and coats. Pet owners should start introducing solid food to puppies as early as 4 weeks of age. It should be given to puppies several times a day (2~3 daily meals), provided with dam’s/replacement milk or clean drinking water. As the dam’s milk no longer meets puppies’ nutrient requirements, it also gives time for the dam’s body to recover from gestation and lactation.

Vitamins and supplements can also be given to puppies. Some small breeds may need extra electrolytes as they are prone to hypoglycemia. With proper nutrition and support, puppies can be weaned at 6 weeks of age.

How to choose the best dog food for my puppies?

The first thing to consider is the breed of your puppy. Dogs are very diverse species in terms of size, which is a variable in growth development. Small breeds usually take a year to mature, while large~giant breeds take 2 years to reach maturity.

Since large breed puppies have a slow growth rate, the nutrients are provided gradually. Dog food for large breed puppies contains fewer calories to avoid gaining excessive weight. While small breed dogs have a very fast growth rate, calorie requirements are much higher than large breed puppies.

Secondly, check if the dog food you are providing to your puppies is complete pet food.

  1. Complete pet food means pet food which, by reason of its composition, is sufficient for a daily ration. When a complete pet food is fed for an extended period as the only source of nutrients, it will provide all the nutritional needs of the puppy.[1]
  2. Complementary pet food means pet food that has a high content of certain substances but which, by reason of its composition, is sufficient for a daily ration only if used in combination with other pet foods. [1]

This information should be checked by pet owners as some puppies are not required to take supplements if fed with complete pet food. Supplementation of a complete diet can be risky and may lead to growth abnormalities. [2]
